As someone who has had the privilege of good health, a secure family and friends network, and an exciting career that I’m passionate about, the last year has come as a bit of a shock when my sister fell ill.
The realities of my life choice to live on the other side of the world to the rest of my family had never been more apparent upon hearing about my sister’s health. All I wanted to do was be with my family in the UK.
When I shared my news with my leader at Kasada, any concerns I had about being able to be there evaporated. She immediately put my own and my family’s well-being first, sought to understand what I wanted to do, and then supported me 100% in making that happen. Whether it was costing up flights, rescheduling meetings, flexing across time zones, or sending well-wishing hampers to my whole family, I could not have gotten through those months without that kindness and support.
I have been back and forth for periods of weeks each time to just be there and help out where I could. I was definitely not able to do the 9-5 stint and flexed myself in order to keep up with my team and deliver the goals and meet the deadlines I had but I was also able to take time out of the day to run errands for the family or entertain my 2-year-old niece during her mum’s treatment. For that, I am so, so grateful. My sister is now on the road to a full recovery, I know if anything like this should happen in the future, I have the flexibility and support of my team to put what matters most first.
